This winter and spring, amidst all the madness in the world, Tom Burnett directed a residency at MSFS Studios in Brooklyn. Tom asked me to engineer the recording, and to play drums and electric keys, rounding out his trio with “the Philadelphia Phenomenon”, Elliott Levin (tenor sax, flute, voice).
First I have to say that working on this project was an honour, an inspiration, and an incredibly expansive experience. These guys had been around the block before I knew what the block was…but that also meant that I brought a different perspective, and as it happens, an overlapping set of interests and skills. Tom brought some musical outlines/sketches; he and Elliott also brought poetry. Once we started playing though, it was all group improvisation.
I am mixing some of these tracks with Tom, and look forward to sharing this collaboration with you all soon!
